A young beauty school student was killed in what police believe was a murder-suicide outside a Florida cosmetology school, leaving a family and community in shock.
The victim, identified by her family as 20-year-old Aileen Martinez, was shot and killed Tuesday, January 24, outside the Aveda Institute in Davie, Florida, according to local authorities.
Police said the shooter was a 25-year-old man who had previously been in a relationship with Martinez. His name has not been released. Authorities confirmed he later died at a hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Family members said Martinez was studying cosmetology at the Aveda Institute and had a deep love for creativity. In addition to beauty school, she had spent the past four years studying music at a Miami music school and regularly performed with bands at local events.
In the days following her death, a GoFundMe created by loved ones has raised more than $50,000 to help cover funeral and family expenses.
“She loved rock n’ roll, thrift shopping, playing computer video games, and discovering new makeup tricks,” the organizer wrote. “Her favorite color was jade green, which symbolizes peace and calm, love and harmony — all traits that represented Aileen.”
Martinez was the oldest of three siblings and often played music with her brother, something her family says brought her happiness and connection.
The shooting has deeply shaken the Davie community, as friends and family remember a young woman whose life and future were cut tragically short.
