What was supposed to be a children’s basketball game turned into a shocking brawl — and now a youth coach and her 70-year-old father are facing serious charges.
Police in Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania, say Brittany Ortiz, 38, and her father, William Stanley, 70, were arrested after a game involving 7- and 8-year-olds in the Malvern Basketball League spiraled into chaos on February 1.
The matchup took place at Holy Child School at Rosemont, a Catholic elementary school that was not affiliated with the league.
According to investigators, tensions started building during the game when Ortiz — an assistant coach — allegedly began shouting and cursing from the sidelines. Witnesses told local media that Stanley also got into a heated argument with the opposing team’s coach.
But things didn’t stop when the final buzzer sounded.
Police say that near the gym entrance, Ortiz continued arguing with the other coach and his wife before allegedly grabbing the woman by the hair and slamming her to the ground. A criminal complaint claims the woman’s head struck the floor during the altercation.
As the opposing coach tried to intervene, Stanley allegedly struck him in the head. Investigators say Ortiz then kicked the coach in the inner thigh and attempted to kick him in the groin.
In a heartbreaking detail, the coach was reportedly holding his 3-year-old daughter at the time. According to the complaint, the child became hysterical during the alleged attack and suffered a bruise on her leg amid the chaos.
The alleged victims were left with significant injuries. The coach suffered bruising to his inner thigh. His wife reportedly lost clumps of hair, sustained a concussion, and suffered a scalp contusion.
Ortiz has been charged with assault on a sports official, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct, and harassment. Court records show she was held on $10,000 bail.
Authorities also sought charges against Stanley, who later surrendered to police.
Stanley’s attorney, Nathan Schadler, told reporters that his client was taken to the hospital with broken bones and a head injury. He added that they plan to conduct their own investigation and that Stanley maintains his innocence. According to the attorney, it was Stanley’s family who called 911 and requested police assistance.
