An 11-year-old girl was taken into custody Monday after she allegedly stabbed a 12-year-old boy inside a Bronx middle school, according to police.
The shocking incident unfolded around 11:07 a.m. inside I.S. 218 on Gerard Avenue in the Concourse neighborhood, the NYPD said. Authorities say the boy was stabbed in the left arm during the altercation. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
What sparked the violence remains unclear, and investigators are still working to piece together exactly what happened inside the school building.
The school, which serves roughly 800 students, is reportedly staffed by just one school safety agent — a detail that is already raising questions among concerned parents.
In a statement, the Department of Education called the attack “unacceptable and deeply concerning.”
“Immediately following this incident EMS and NYPD quickly arrived on site to ensure the safety and well-being of impacted students,” the DOE said. “We will be working closely with the school community to ensure all necessary supports are provided.”
Sources told 1010 WINS that the school will offer counseling and mental health services for students and staff as officials work closely with the families involved.
No additional information about possible charges or what led up to the stabbing has been released.
