A heartbreaking case out of Alabama is leaving a community shaken after a missing 10-year-old girl was found dead inside her own home — and police say another child is now facing a murder charge.

Authorities say Katheryn Bigbee was reported missing late Friday night, prompting officers in Piedmont to rush to the scene around 10:51 p.m. But when they arrived, the situation quickly took a devastating turn.

Instead of finding a missing child, first responders discovered Katheryn dead inside the residence.

Police say a second juvenile — whose identity has not been released due to their age — has been taken into custody and charged with murder. Officials are releasing very few details, citing the fact that both the victim and the suspect are minors, and the investigation is still ongoing.

“This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved and for our entire community,” said Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson, asking for prayers and privacy for the family during an incredibly painful time.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the small Alabama community, with those who knew Katheryn remembering her as a bright and joyful child.

Her elementary school shared an emotional message, calling her a “sweet little girl” who brought kindness and light wherever she went. They described her as an enthusiastic reader with a spunky personality who made a lasting impression on classmates and teachers alike.

Family members are also struggling to process the loss. One relative said the family has been “torn to pieces,” adding that the pain and unanswered questions have left them overwhelmed with grief.
