A Wisconsin couple is facing horrifying child neglect charges after investigators say a 1-year-old girl was allegedly given Fireball whiskey to help her “pass out” before she was later found dead inside her crib.
The disturbing case began on Feb. 22 when police and firefighters rushed to a home after reports of a “pulseless nonbreathing child.” When first responders arrived, they reportedly found 20-year-old Kevin McCall and 23-year-old Christina Davis standing outside the residence holding the unresponsive toddler.
The little girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
As investigators dug deeper into the case, the details became even more heartbreaking.
According to criminal complaints obtained by local outlets, Davis’ 6-year-old daughter allegedly told police she was often left responsible for caring for the baby while the adults were gone. Investigators say the young girl described a chaotic home environment where she regularly had to help watch her younger sibling.
Police said Davis told investigators that she and McCall woke up around 9:30 that morning and left the children asleep while they went to get Popeyes. After returning home with food, Davis allegedly left for work while McCall stayed behind with the kids.
When Davis returned home hours later, she allegedly found her older daughter standing in the corner as punishment for taking a TV remote. McCall reportedly admitted he had “whooped” the child.
Davis then allegedly walked into another room and found her 1-year-old daughter stiff and unresponsive, with her eyes rolling backward. She reportedly screamed for McCall to call 911.
Investigators say the conditions inside the home were disturbing. According to reports, the baby was allegedly found covered in urine and feces, while officers described the residence as filthy and carrying a strong odor.
But one of the most shocking allegations came from the 6-year-old child.
According to investigators, the little girl told detectives that the adults would sometimes give the baby a small bottle of Fireball whiskey to make her “pass out.” The child reportedly showed investigators what she described as the “medicine” bottle used for the toddler.
“I don’t think it is medicine,” the girl allegedly told detectives.
Davis denied giving the child alcohol and claimed her daughter was lying. She allegedly told police she only gave the toddler cold and flu medication. Davis also reportedly admitted she relied heavily on her 6-year-old daughter to help care for the home because McCall “does not provide any assistance.”
McCall allegedly admitted that he and Davis had left the children home alone at least 25 times over the past several months. He also reportedly told investigators that while Davis was at work, he never fed the baby or changed her diaper.
The medical examiner reportedly found no obvious signs of trauma, illness, or infection that immediately explained the toddler’s death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Both McCall and Davis have been arrested and charged with two counts of chronic neglect of a child. They are currently being held in the Milwaukee County Jail.
McCall’s attorney released a statement reminding the public that his client is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Authorities have not announced whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
