A Georgia high school biology teacher is facing serious criminal charges after authorities accused her of having sexual encounters with a student — including one allegedly inside a classroom closet.
According to reports, 25-year-old Maris Nichols was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority.
Investigators say the alleged incidents happened while Nichols was teaching at Alexander High School in Douglasville, a suburb located west of Atlanta.
Court documents reportedly accuse Nichols of having intercourse with a student on two separate occasions.
One alleged encounter supposedly took place inside a closet at the high school on April 23.
Authorities say the second incident allegedly happened on May 2 inside a Hummer parked in a residential driveway.
Nichols appeared before a judge on May 8, where her bond was set at $40,000.
School officials reportedly alerted parents about the investigation shortly before Nichols was taken into custody.
In a statement, the Douglas County School System said it was “deeply troubled” by the allegations and confirmed an immediate investigation was launched after learning about the alleged misconduct.
Law enforcement officers were reportedly seen at the school during the investigation.
Nichols has since been removed from the school’s website, though officials have not publicly clarified her current employment status with the district.
Jail records show Nichols is no longer in custody.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue examining the allegations surrounding the teacher and student.
