A Pennsylvania man has been found guilty of brutally attacking a 74-year-old stranger, stabbing him multiple times and throwing him down a flight of stairs in what authorities described as a random assault.
Jasper Hilliard, 24, was convicted of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, possessing an instrument of crime with intent and resisting arrest, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
The case dates back more than three years to a terrifying attack in Pittsburgh.
Victim Al Carlson said he was walking down the street when he passed Hilliard, who suddenly turned toward him.
“He turned and looked at me and says, ‘I got you,’” Carlson told local CBS affiliate KDKA. “Then, he started slashing with the knife.”
Carlson also described the attack to local ABC affiliate WTAE, saying Hilliard appeared to walk away before coming back behind him.
“He turned like he was gonna walk away from me, then he come back and got behind me again,” Carlson said. “And I didn’t feel it, like I said, but I assumed he stabbed me again. Then he picked me up and threw me down the stairs, put me out of sight.”
Authorities said Carlson was stabbed seven times in the neck, chest and stomach.
A neighbor later found him and called 911.
Carlson spent a week in intensive care and another week in a trauma unit as he recovered from the attack.
Pittsburgh police arrested Hilliard and described the assault as completely random. Investigators said he confessed after his arrest.
Authorities said Hilliard claimed he attacked Carlson after smoking K2, a form of synthetic marijuana, and said he did it “out of convenience.”
Hilliard reportedly lived in the area and was one of Carlson’s neighbors.
According to authorities, while Carlson was fighting for his life in the hospital, residents saw Hilliard back in the city after his family gathered the money needed to get him out of jail.
Now, more than three years after the attack, Hilliard has been convicted.
He is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
