A Kansas mother and father are facing felony charges after one of their children allegedly found a loaded, unsecured shotgun and fatally shot two young siblings inside the family’s home.
Aaron French, 37, and Makayla French, 28, have each been charged with four counts of aggravated child endangerment in connection with the deaths of 8-year-old Paxton French and 5-year-old Lilly French, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The tragedy unfolded on March 28 at the family’s home in Brookville, a small community about 100 miles northwest of Wichita.
Investigators determined that a young child inside the home gained access to a loaded shotgun that had not been properly secured and shot Paxton and Lilly.
Lilly was pronounced dead at the scene.
Paxton was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries but died several days later on April 3.
Authorities have not revealed how the child found the weapon, how many shots were fired or the age of the child believed to have pulled the trigger.
The criminal charges allege that Aaron and Makayla French recklessly placed their children in danger of physical harm. The Ellsworth County attorney filed the charges on Friday.
As the parents prepare to appear in court, loved ones are remembering Paxton and Lilly for their joyful personalities and the things they loved most.
Paxton’s obituary described him as an adventurous boy who enjoyed riding his go-kart and four-wheeler and dreamed of joining the U.S. Army one day.
He also loved playing Minecraft with his siblings.
“He loved playing Minecraft, especially when he could share that time with his siblings, laughing, building, and creating worlds together,” the obituary read.
Paxton also had a special bond with his hamster and showed a gentle, caring side while looking after the small pet.
Lilly was remembered as an energetic little girl who loved K-pop, singing, swimming and spending time outdoors.
She also loved school and had a deep affection for animals.
“Lilly had a kind and nurturing heart, always caring for others,” her obituary read. “She was a true princess who adored pretty clothes, dresses, shoes, and boots.”
Aaron and Makayla French are scheduled to appear in court on July 28.
