A North Carolina neighborhood has been left stunned after a longtime couple was found dead inside their home in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide.
Stephen Larnell Willetts and Tracey Parker Willetts were discovered at their home on Rowsgate Lane in New Hanover County on the morning of July 30, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators believe Tracey fatally shot her husband before turning the gun on herself.
“Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, detectives believe this to be a murder-suicide in which the wife fatally shot her husband before taking her own life,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Authorities said the investigation remains active and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Police were reportedly alerted to the home by one of the victims’ smartwatches. The device automatically dialed 911 after apparently detecting either a serious fall or the absence of a pulse.
A friend of Tracey told local outlet WWAY that the couple had recently returned from a trip celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
Stephen and Tracey were also well known within the Wrightsville Beach paddleboarding community.
Neighbors described Stephen as a warm and friendly man who regularly stopped to speak with people in the area.
“The neighborhood is thoroughly shocked,” neighbor Wyatt Patrick told WECT.
Patrick said Stephen often asked about his running progress or exchanged friendly greetings while neighbors were out walking their dogs.
“He was consistent and one of the friendlier people I’ve met around here,” Patrick said.
Authorities have not publicly revealed what may have led to the deadly shooting.
The sheriff’s office said detectives are continuing to investigate the deaths.
