A Labor Day barbecue turned deadly in Michigan after an argument over something as ordinary as how to cook chicken allegedly ended with one man stabbing another to death.
Cleo Lawson, 62, of Detroit, is accused of killing his sister’s boyfriend, 60-year-old Kenneth Erwin Thomas, during a backyard barbecue in Hazel Park on Sept. 7.
Thomas and his live-in girlfriend were hosting the gathering at their home in the 1600 block of East Granet Avenue when Lawson, the woman’s brother, joined them, according to Hazel Park police.
At some point during the barbecue, Lawson and Thomas allegedly began arguing over how the chicken should be prepared.
Police say the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation before Lawson allegedly stabbed Thomas.
Officers were called to the home at about 5:20 p.m. and attempted to save Thomas, but he died from his injuries at the scene. Authorities have not publicly said what type of weapon was used.
Lawson was taken into custody and later charged with second-degree murder.
He was arraigned on Sept. 10 and denied bond. Lawson remains locked up in the Oakland County Jail as the case moves forward.
Court records show Lawson is scheduled for a probable cause conference on Sept. 22.
