A Texas family is facing an unimaginable tragedy after a 15-year-old high school sophomore was killed in a violent two-vehicle crash that left her older sister critically injured.
Melody Hope Newhouse, a sophomore at Farmersville High School, died Friday, Sept. 25, after the car she was riding in collided with another vehicle on State Highway 78 near the school in Farmersville, about 50 miles northeast of Dallas.
Melody was riding in a Toyota Camry driven by her 19-year-old sister when the crash happened shortly after school.
According to Farmersville police, the Camry was traveling north on Highway 78 when a southbound pickup attempted to turn left toward County Road 616 and crossed into the car’s path.
The impact was devastating.
Police said the Camry suffered extensive front-end damage, with the engine block pushed into the passenger compartment. The vehicle then caught fire.
Passing motorists were able to put out the flames, according to the local crash report.
Melody was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her sister had to be freed from the wreckage and was rushed to Medical City McKinney with severe injuries.
Their father, Eric Newhouse, later said in a fundraiser that his older daughter remained in critical condition and was “fighting for her life.”
Police confirmed that both drivers involved in the wreck were hospitalized, though authorities had not released an updated condition for either driver as of the latest reports.
The crash has devastated the small Farmersville community, especially because Melody had already survived another life-threatening accident on the same highway.
In October 2023, Melody was seriously injured after being struck by a truck while leaving a school dance, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.
She survived that accident and eventually returned to school.
Nearly three years later, she lost her life on the same roadway.
Farmersville Independent School District confirmed Melody’s death and remembered her as a bright and creative student who had a wide range of interests.
“Melody brought creativity, curiosity, and hope for the future to her time at Farmersville High School,” the district said.
School officials said she was succeeding in several honors classes and enjoyed writing, origami, engineering and learning Spanish.
She also dreamed of someday starting her own YouTube channel.
“Loved by students and staff, Melody will be deeply missed throughout our school community,” the district said.
Counselors have been made available to students and staff struggling with the loss.
The school also asked the community to keep Melody’s family, classmates, teachers and others injured in the crash in their prayers.
Police said the collision remains under investigation.
No criminal charges had been announced in connection with the crash as of the latest update, and investigators had not publicly identified any additional factors that may have contributed to the wreck.
Melody’s funeral arrangements have also been announced.
A visitation is scheduled for Oct. 4 at Hurst’s Fielder-Baker Funeral Home in Farmersville, followed by funeral services Oct. 5 at First Baptist Church of Farmersville.
For her family, the grief is compounded by the fact that one daughter is gone while another remains hospitalized.
Friends and community members have begun rallying around the Newhouse family as Melody’s sister continues her recovery and relatives prepare to lay the 15-year-old to rest.
