A murder investigation is underway on a tiny island between England and France after a 34-year-old mother of two was found dead in the ocean at the bottom of a steep cliff.
Hannah Benfield was discovered early Monday morning near an area known locally as The Guns on Alderney, one of the Channel Islands.
A 44-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Police have not disclosed his identity or explained what evidence led to the arrest, and no charges have been announced.
The case has stunned Alderney, an isolated island with a population of only a little more than 2,000 people where serious violent crime is rare.
The mystery began shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, when Guernsey Police received a report of an incident near the southwestern cliffs of the island.
A major overnight search-and-rescue operation was launched.
Emergency teams searched the coastline and surrounding waters for hours with help from local services, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the French Coastguard and Channel Islands Air Search.
At approximately 4:28 a.m. Monday, volunteers aboard a search aircraft spotted a person in the water below the cliffs.
Rescue crews were directed to the location, but Benfield was confirmed dead.
Police later publicly identified the victim as Hannah Benfield, also known by her maiden name, Hannah Cox.
She was the mother of two children and was well known in the small island community.
Authorities said specialist family liaison officers are supporting her loved ones, who have requested privacy as they come to terms with her death.
Meanwhile, investigators arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
The man initially received medical treatment at a hospital before being transferred into police custody.
Authorities have not revealed why he required hospital treatment or what connection, if any, he had to Benfield.
Being arrested on suspicion of murder does not mean the man has been convicted or formally found responsible for Benfield’s death.
Detectives have stressed that their investigation remains active and that they are keeping an open mind about the circumstances surrounding what happened.
Police have also said they are not currently searching for any additional suspects and do not believe there is an ongoing danger to the wider community.
Investigators are now trying to reconstruct Benfield’s final hours.
Officers have issued an appeal to anyone who was driving around the western portion of Alderney between approximately 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday.
Police are particularly interested in dashcam footage from vehicles traveling along Rue de Longis or nearby roads.
Even footage that appears insignificant could potentially help detectives establish who was in the area and what occurred before emergency services were alerted.
The investigation has brought an unusually large police and emergency-services presence to Alderney.
The Channel Islands sit in the English Channel off the coast of France. Although they have close historical ties to Britain and are British Crown Dependencies, they are not technically part of the United Kingdom.
Alderney is the third-largest of the Channel Islands but has only a fraction of the population of nearby Jersey and Guernsey.
That small population has made Benfield’s death particularly difficult for residents.
Guernsey Police acknowledged the effect such an investigation can have on a place where many residents know one another.
“Alderney is a small, close-knit community, and the impact of an incident of this nature on a community like that cannot be overstated,” police said.
Local priest Mother Samantha Martell said residents had been shaken by what happened and encouraged people to support one another as the investigation continues.
Tributes have also begun appearing for Benfield.
Stephen Bacon, who said he previously taught her, remembered his former student as a kind young woman who had left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
Police have been particularly careful about releasing details surrounding Benfield’s death.
Authorities have not publicly explained how she ended up in the water, what injuries she suffered or what they believe occurred near the cliffs Sunday night.
Investigators have also urged residents to avoid speculation while detectives gather evidence.
That caution could become especially important in such a small community, where rumors can spread quickly and potentially complicate an active criminal investigation.
For now, the central questions surrounding Benfield’s death remain unanswered.
Detectives are continuing to gather witness statements, review potential video evidence and establish a timeline of events leading up to the discovery of her body.
The 44-year-old suspect remained in police custody as the investigation continued.
For Benfield’s family, however, the case is already an unimaginable tragedy.
