More than three years after a 29-year-old woman was stabbed to death while hiking alone on a Phoenix trail, the man accused of killing her has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
Zion Teasley, 25, entered the plea Friday in connection with the April 2023 killing of Lauren Heike.
Heike was found dead near the Reach 11 trail in north Phoenix after suffering 15 stab wounds.
Investigators said she had been attacked from behind and appeared to have tried to fight off her attacker before dying from her injuries.
The case drew widespread attention because Heike appeared to have been targeted at random while walking alone in broad daylight.
Police said surveillance footage showed Heike heading toward the trail shortly before Teasley was seen walking in the same direction.
Authorities later alleged that Teasley ran after her before fleeing the area.
Investigators found blood and personal belongings scattered near the scene, and court records indicated that Heike may have been chased through or over a barbed-wire fence during the attack.
The medical examiner found stab wounds to her chest and back, along with defensive injuries on her hands and forearms.
A major break in the investigation came when DNA recovered from Heike’s shoe was matched to Teasley.
Police also used surveillance footage, cellphone location data and other forensic evidence to link him to the crime.
Teasley was arrested just days after Heike’s body was discovered.
According to the original probable cause affidavit, a former employer identified Teasley from surveillance images and told investigators he had recently been fired after behaving aggressively toward female coworkers and stealing merchandise.
The employer also told police that Teasley regularly carried a folding pocketknife with a blade similar in size to the weapon investigators believed was used in the attack.
During questioning, police said Teasley acknowledged that he was the person shown in at least one surveillance image from the area, although he later appeared to back away from that identification.
He also told detectives he recognized Heike from news coverage.
Teasley initially faced the possibility of the death penalty.
That changed under the plea agreement announced Friday.
Prosecutors agreed to withdraw their notice seeking capital punishment in exchange for Teasley pleading guilty to first-degree murder and accepting a natural life sentence.
The judge told the court that the agreement means Teasley is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison without being released.
Separate assault and burglary charges were also dismissed as part of the deal.
Teasley has additionally pleaded guilty in a separate sexual exploitation case involving child pornography. Sentencing in that case is also scheduled for Dec. 4.
Heike’s family said they support the plea agreement after more than three years of waiting for the case to be resolved.
They said avoiding a trial means they will not have to sit through graphic testimony and relive the details of Lauren’s death in court.
The family also said they had supported prosecutors’ original effort to seek the death penalty but ultimately agreed with the decision to accept a guilty plea that ensures Teasley will never be released.
For Heike’s loved ones, the plea brings a measure of closure to a case that began with a routine hike and ended in a brutal killing that shocked the Phoenix community.
Teasley is scheduled to be formally sentenced on Dec. 4.

Wake up Arizona, this murderer should be tortured and executed! Enough is Enough with these murderers. Let him sit on death row for a bit then execute him! Why should the tax payers pay to feed and cloth this murderer for life while her family and friends anguish over her death for the rest of their lives!
