A retired San Francisco police sergeant allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife, a former deputy police chief, and their 24-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself inside their California home.
The shocking tragedy unfolded Sunday, October 11, in the upscale Marin County community of Strawberry, just north of San Francisco.
Authorities identified the suspected gunman as Kevin Mannix, 68, a former San Francisco Police Department sergeant. His wife, retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and their daughter, Katherine “Katie” Mannix, 24, were also found dead inside the family’s home.
According to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Strawberry Circle shortly after 5 p.m.
A person inside the house managed to escape and contact authorities. Investigators subsequently entered the property and discovered all three bodies.
The preliminary investigation points to a double murder-suicide, with Kevin Mannix identified as the suspected shooter. Authorities said there was no continuing threat to the surrounding community.
The deaths have devastated friends, neighbors and former colleagues, particularly because both Kevin and Ann spent decades serving in law enforcement.
Ann was a highly respected officer who spent more than 30 years with the San Francisco Police Department, eventually becoming deputy chief.
She broke barriers as the first woman to join and later lead the department’s SWAT team. She also commanded its Field Operations and Special Operations bureaus, earning a reputation as a pioneering figure in law enforcement.
Her husband had served as a police sergeant for 27 years before retiring.
Friends revealed that the couple had been going through a divorce before the deadly shooting.
Marie Hurabiell, a longtime family friend, told ABC7 News she was devastated by Ann’s death, describing her as a woman who remained optimistic despite the difficulties in her personal life.
Hurabiell said Ann was “so full of hope and joy and life” in the period leading up to the tragedy.
Their daughter Katie was remembered as a kindhearted young woman who had been pursuing a career in nursing.
On Monday, grieving neighbors began leaving flowers outside the family’s home as the community struggled to understand what had happened.
San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew paid tribute to Ann’s remarkable career, acknowledging that the circumstances surrounding her death made the loss especially difficult for the department.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association also remembered her as a trailblazer who helped open doors for women in policing.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ann was active in community programs and youth mentorship, including volunteer coaching.
The tragedy has also shaken former colleagues who worked alongside both Ann and Kevin during their years on the police force.
Investigators have not publicly established a motive for the killings, and it remains unclear what led to the deadly confrontation.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation, with autopsies scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, to determine the official causes and manners of death.
