A 59-year-old man in Australia is facing serious jail time after a bizarre bathroom-related outburst on a commercial flight led to his arrest.

According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the passenger was removed from a July 14 flight from Perth to Brisbane after refusing to obey flight crew instructions just as the plane was preparing for takeoff. The issue? He wanted to use the bathroom—and reportedly wasn’t taking no for an answer.

Authorities say the man pushed a crew member after being told to return to his seat, prompting the captain to call for police assistance. Officers met the aircraft at the gate and escorted the man off the flight. Police allege he was also uncooperative during the arrest.

The AFP released a photo of the man being detained, showing him in a white button-up shirt and black pants, seated in a holding area with stark white walls. Officials have not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.

AFP Inspector Peter Brindal emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that flight crews work hard to ensure passenger safety and that “any aggressive or violent behaviour towards them was unacceptable.”

“The AFP has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the assault or mistreatment of airline staff, and anyone who commits such an offense can be prosecuted,” Brindal said.

The man has been charged with assaulting a crew member, a serious offense under Australian law that could land him behind bars for up to 14 years if convicted. He’s scheduled to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on July 29.

This incident is part of a troubling global trend. In the U.S. alone, the Federal Aviation Administration has already logged 934 reports of unruly passengers in 2025. The FAA warns that unruly behavior on planes can result in hefty fines of up to $37,000 per violation and potential felony charges.
