A Virginia city councilman is fighting for his life after being doused in gasoline and set on fire in a shocking attack at his office last week.

Lee Vogler, 38, a longtime member of the Danville City Council, suffered second- and third-degree burns over more than half his body and remains in “stable but critical condition” at the UNC Chapel Hill Burn Clinic, according to a GoFundMe page launched by friends and family.

“His wife, Blair, and their children are by his side as he begins what will be a long, painful, and uncertain recovery,” the fundraiser states, noting that he faces multiple surgeries, months in the hospital, and years of rehabilitation.

Police say the attack happened on July 30 when a man carrying a five-gallon bucket of gasoline forced his way into Vogler’s workplace. Andrew Brooks, Vogler’s business partner at Showcase Magazine, said Vogler tried to run to the front of the building after being doused, but the attacker followed him and set him on fire.

Authorities arrested 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes the same day, charging him with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a personal matter and was not politically motivated.

Brooks called the incident “a horrific and senseless act of violence.” As of Aug. 8, the GoFundMe campaign had raised nearly $130,000 to help cover Vogler’s long-term medical needs.

Blair Vogler said doctors expect her husband to be hospitalized for at least six months. “Lee’s injuries will permanently impact his and his family’s lives,” she shared, adding, “Lee is a fighter… We are incredibly thankful for the exceptional care at UNC Chapel Hill and the overwhelming support from friends, neighbors, and our Danville community. At this time, we kindly ask for privacy and your continued prayers.”
