A Boston neighborhood is reeling after a gay couple was brutally attacked in what police are investigating as a possible hate crime.
The assault happened on the evening of September 13 in Mattapan, where the couple said a group of men began hurling anti-gay slurs as they walked near River Street. The confrontation escalated quickly, and at least two of the suspects were seen swinging objects at the pair.
One victim was struck in the head with a baseball bat and found bleeding in a parking lot, according to police reports reviewed by local outlets. He was rushed to the hospital after being treated at the scene. His current condition has not been released.
Boston Police confirmed the Civil Rights Unit is now leading the investigation. So far, no arrests have been made.
“We’re just generally concerned about the hostile political moment that we’re in right now and the increased fear that many people in our community are experiencing,” Josh Rovenger, legal director at GLAD Law, told NBC Boston.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, and anonymous tips can be submitted to Boston Police CrimeStoppers by phone or text.
