A Texas police department has admitted to making a grave mistake after officers drove a domestic violence suspect back to his estranged wife’s home—the same place where she was later found stabbed to death.

Frederick Spears, 55, has been charged with the murder of his 53-year-old wife, Mary Spears, in Arlington. The couple had been estranged, though Mary had been allowing him to stay at the home on and off.

Just days before the killing, police arrested Frederick on a charge of aggravated assault family violence after he allegedly threatened his stepson, Ashton Spears, with two kitchen knives. He was released on bond the following day, under a protective order that explicitly barred him from contacting his family or returning to his wife’s home.

But after bonding out, Frederick went to the local police station and asked for a ride back to the house to retrieve his car. An officer arranged for another cop to drive him there, despite the court order. Once at the home, he argued with family members before leaving on foot.

Police now admit the decision was a serious lapse. “The department acknowledges that the officers should not have arranged transportation back to the home,” officials said in a statement. “A comprehensive administrative review is underway to determine what changes to policies or procedures are needed to ensure this never happens again.”

Days later, Mary Spears was found dead in her backyard, suffering multiple stab wounds. Frederick allegedly sent incriminating text messages to her before the killing, and a “concerning” message to another family member, who later discovered her body.

When police moved to arrest Frederick on Tuesday, he reportedly pulled out a knife and began stabbing himself. Officers used tasers, less-lethal rounds, and a K9 unit before he finally dropped the weapon and was taken into custody. He is currently hospitalized and awaiting his next court date on October 8.

Mary’s son, Ashton, said the family is devastated and furious. “It makes me so mad,” he told WFAA. “I don’t want to ruin the officer’s life or get her in trouble, but I do think that everybody needs to know that they brought him back.”

What started as a domestic violence case has now left a family shattered—and police scrambling to explain how such a critical mistake was made.
