A Texas woman is behind bars after a shocking incident on school grounds left a 13-year-old girl seriously injured.
According to the Overton Police Department, the incident unfolded on Saturday at Overton Independent School District property. The teenage girl was accidentally struck by a car and became trapped underneath the vehicle. Instead of calling 911 immediately, police say adults at the scene attempted to free her on their own.
When those efforts failed, one woman, identified as 35-year-old Angel Rupkey, made what investigators are calling a “tragic and reckless decision.” Police allege Rupkey got behind the wheel and, in an attempt to dislodge the child, drove over her a second time—causing further injury.
Emergency crews from Christus EMS and the Overton Fire Department eventually arrived and rushed the girl to a hospital by helicopter. She remains hospitalized but is currently listed in stable condition.
In a statement, Overton ISD said: “We are especially thankful for the quick response of our local first responders, and our hearts are with the young girl and her family during this very difficult time.” Officials also confirmed that none of the adults or children present during the incident were residents or students of Overton.
On Tuesday, U.S. Marshals arrested Rupkey on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She was booked into Smith County Jail, where her bond was set at $150,000.
