Woman Arrested for Theft After Identifying Herself in Social Media Post

A Florida woman may have just committed one of the dumbest crimes of the year — and then turned herself in.

Brynn Gifford, 19, is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing a credit card from a nail salon client and racking up more than $500 in fraudulent purchases over three days in Palm Coast, Florida, law enforcement said.

The alleged theft took place at Palm Nails, where Gifford worked as a receptionist. The victim realized her card was missing on August 9, three days after visiting the salon, and soon discovered ten suspicious charges at local stores and restaurants.

Authorities had little to go on at first — just a vague description of a woman with long dark hair wearing a white jacket. But then the sheriff’s office posted a low-resolution photo on Facebook in an attempt to identify the suspect.

Here’s the twist: Gifford saw the post — and called the sheriff’s office herself, confessing to being the woman in the photo. During a police interview, she initially denied any wrongdoing, but when shown surveillance images of her using the stolen card at Walmart to buy notebooks and pens, she admitted it. Authorities later recovered the items in her backpack.

Gifford was arrested on October 16 and booked into the Volusia County Correctional Facility. She was released on a $4,000 bond.

“This case is a great example of the power of social media,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Less than a day after we posted the suspect’s photo, she came forward herself. Her bad decision landed her in jail on multiple felony charges, but our detectives would have caught her eventually.”
