A man who sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl in the Virginia home where he was hired to work has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Ricardo Leonel Mejia, 35, pleaded guilty in June to three counts of raping a child under 13, Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin D. Stolle confirmed in a press release on Oct. 7.

According to prosecutors, the victim’s mother discovered Mejia naked in her daughter’s bed on Oct. 9, 2024, realizing he was the contractor hired to renovate a bathroom in their home. The mother had attempted to check on her daughter earlier, but the bedroom door was locked. She eventually forced the door open using a butter knife.

Mejia reportedly jumped out of the bed, grabbed some clothing, and fled through an open window. The victim later told police that Mejia had assaulted her. Forensic testing confirmed the presence of Mejia’s DNA and spermatozoa on the girl.

When questioned, Mejia admitted to police that he knew the victim was underage and that the assault that night was the third time he had engaged in sexual activity with her. He claimed the first incident had occurred just days earlier in the bathroom while her parents were away. Prosecutors said he fled through the window out of fear of a confrontation with the victim’s father.

A judge sentenced Mejia to 75 years in prison, with 45 years suspended, leaving a 30-year sentence to be served.

The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office noted that Mejia is a citizen of El Salvador and was in the U.S. illegally at the time of the crime. He will serve his sentence before being taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
