Authorities in North Carolina are in the middle of a tense manhunt for a suspect accused of stabbing a sheriff’s deputy while being sought in connection with his grandmother’s murder.

Law enforcement responded to a Havelock, N.C., home over the weekend after a structure fire and death were reported. Inside, they discovered the body of 72-year-old Patricia Lopedote, the Craven County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators quickly identified Lopedote’s 24-year-old grandson, Dominic Liam Connelly, as a person of interest. Her vehicle, which had gone missing from the residence, was recovered on Tuesday, October 28.

The search escalated on Wednesday when Connelly was spotted at a business in Vanceboro, about 36 miles from where his grandmother’s body was found. Police said he attacked a deputy with a knife inside a Bojangles bathroom before fleeing the scene.

Authorities have not released a motive for Lopedote’s killing. The grandmother, described in her obituary as “beloved” by family and friends, leaves behind a large family. She was known for her creativity, generosity, and sense of humor, as well as her love for handmade Christmas ornaments and even her family dog.

As the manhunt entered its second day on Friday, October 31, local schools were closed, and the annual Eagles Fall Fest was canceled, according to News 12.

Connelly had already been charged with murder, first-degree arson, and larceny of a motor vehicle. The sheriff’s office said he now faces additional charges, including attempted first-degree murder, felony assault on law enforcement causing serious injury, and resisting a public officer. Anyone aiding him could also face criminal charges.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to Connelly’s arrest, the sheriff’s office added.
