A father and his 9-year-old son were found dead in what police are calling a possible murder-suicide in Mansfield, Ohio.
Officers responded around noon on Saturday, Nov. 29, to a report of “two individuals with gunshot wounds,” according to the Mansfield Police Department. When authorities arrived, the father, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene. His son was rushed to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police described the situation as an “apparent” murder-suicide but said detectives and the Richland County Coroner’s Office are continuing their investigation. Out of respect for the family, the names of the father and son have not been released.
The father’s girlfriend was reportedly in the home during the incident but was unharmed, neighbors told Cleveland 19 News. Frances Gray, a friend and nearby resident, said the woman appeared to be in shock, telling her, “I don’t know… I just heard a pop. I was upstairs.”
Neighbors expressed disbelief over the tragedy. Gray described the father as “an amazing guy” who “loved his son” and was a “good friend” and landlord who “gave people chances that didn’t need chances.” Her husband, Shawn McArdle, added, “I don’t believe it at all to save my soul. He would never harm his own child at all whatsoever.”
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
