A Mississippi woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for brutally setting her ex-boyfriend on fire, leaving him with life-altering injuries.

Kalena Stubbs, 51, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, receiving the maximum sentence allowed under state law, Madison County District Attorney John “Bubba” Bramlett announced Wednesday, Dec. 3.

“The injuries this victim suffered were horrific and some of the most severe we have seen,” Bramlett said. “I know that his injuries will affect him for the rest of his life, and we hope that this sentence gives him some sense that justice has been done.”

The shocking crime unfolded on Jan. 16, when deputies were called to the victim’s home after he had been badly burned. Investigators discovered severe burns covering his torso, upper arms, and face—but curiously, his clothes were untouched.

Stubbs initially claimed her ex had fallen into a fireplace while holding a bottle of lighter fluid. However, officers quickly grew suspicious after finding an untouched bottle of lighter fluid on the mantle and learning that Stubbs had changed the victim’s clothes before calling 911.

“The officers immediately began to suspect Stubbs was responsible but were unable to ask the victim about what happened due to his injuries,” Bramlett explained.

The victim was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he endured months of recovery in burn units and nursing homes for third-degree burns covering his upper body. Once he could speak, he told investigators that Stubbs had doused him with lighter fluid and set him on fire during an argument—a claim consistent with the burn patterns on his body.

Stubbs’ attorney did not respond to requests for comment.
