A mother, her two sons, and her daughter-in-law have been found dead in a suspected murder-suicide near Seattle, according to multiple reports.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, Dec. 30, when Mercer Island Police were called to conduct a welfare check at a home in the 8400 block of SE 46th Street around 10:45 a.m. local time. The request came from an attorney representing the homeowner, who had received a concerning email that raised fears for the safety of the occupants.
When officers arrived, they observed an individual inside the residence through a window, appearing to have suffered a gunshot wound. Upon entering the home, they discovered two deceased individuals, later identified as 80-year-old Danielle Cuvillier and her 45-year-old son, Mackenzie P. Williams. Firearms were found within the home and near the victims.
The Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) stated that preliminary information suggests the incident was a homicide followed by a suicide, but assured there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Meanwhile, out of concern for another individual who had also lived at the Mercer Island residence, investigators asked the Issaquah Police Department (IPD) to check on a second property in Issaquah. At this home, located in the 400 block of SE Evans Lane, the IPD discovered two more deceased individuals: a woman in her mid-40s and a man in his mid-30s. Authorities confirmed there was no sign of forced entry, and at this point, no further suspects are believed to be involved.
It has since been reported that the deceased individuals were all family members. Cuvillier’s youngest son, who had been living in the Issaquah home, was found dead, along with his wife. The Issaquah property was reportedly owned by Williams and his spouse.
In a Dec. 31 update, the MIPD revealed that they recovered four firearms from the Mercer Island home, along with an additional firearm from a vehicle. Investigators are still working with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The deaths appear to have been preceded by over a year of family conflict, particularly between Cuvillier and Williams, stemming from a dispute over the care of Cuvillier’s youngest son, who had been diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes severe developmental delays. According to court documents, Williams had accused his mother of being physically and emotionally abusive, which she denied.
In November, Cuvillier was granted guardianship of her younger son after filing a petition. Tensions escalated when Williams allegedly encouraged his younger brother to grant him power of attorney instead of their mother. In the weeks leading up to the deaths, Williams attempted to visit his brother at the Mercer Island home, but Cuvillier refused him entry. The situation escalated, with Williams calling 911 after a confrontation. Cuvillier was charged with fourth-degree assault following the altercation.
Cuvillier later filed for a protection order against Williams on behalf of her younger son, citing his “unpredictable and aggressive” behavior. She also expressed concern over the number of firearms Williams had in his home.
At this time, authorities have not released additional details about the investigation. The Issaquah and Mercer Island police departments, along with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, have not responded to requests for further comment.
