A brutal crime committed by a Utah teenager has ended with a decades-long prison sentence — but for the victim’s family, the punishment can never truly match the loss.
Rowdy Lee Aguilar, now 21, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the killing of his 15-year-old friend, Ivan “Nik” Vetecnik. Aguilar pleaded guilty in September to aggravated murder with a mental health condition for the 2021 slaying in Salt Lake City.
During last week’s sentencing, Nik’s sister, Samantha VanTreese, delivered an emotional victim impact statement directly to the man who killed her brother.
“You were his friend,” she said in court. “He trusted you. My brother looked up to you. And in return, you gave him terror, pain, and his last moments alone. I will never understand how someone could do something so cruel.”
She urged Aguilar to remember exactly what he took from their family.
“I hope you think about the life you destroyed — his laugh, his innocence, his family. What you destroyed is not replaceable,” she said.
VanTreese also shared that Aguilar briefly addressed the family during sentencing.
“He said, ‘Nik did absolutely nothing to me. I’m sorry for being a snake. I’m sorry for being a monster,’” she told the court.
Aguilar was just 17 years old when the killing happened on May 26, 2021. Prosecutors said surveillance footage showed Aguilar and Vetecnik entering Aguilar’s home that morning. More than three hours later, Aguilar was seen leaving alone, wearing a blood-soaked shirt and later disposing of garbage bags at a nearby business.
Aguilar’s father contacted police later that day after discovering Vetecnik’s body inside a cargo trailer on the property. Investigators said the trailer smelled strongly of cleaning chemicals. Inside, police found a bloody glove, a knife, and human remains. Additional body parts were later recovered behind the home.
Authorities said Vetecnik had been stabbed more than 30 times and that parts of his body had been dismembered.
When first questioned, Aguilar denied knowing Vetecnik at all and claimed he had spent the day at his girlfriend’s house. He also had cuts on his hands, which he said came from preparing food for a barbecue. He eventually admitted to the killing, telling investigators, “I did it.” A motive was never publicly disclosed.
Under the terms of his sentence, Aguilar will remain in a youth facility until he turns 25, after which he will be transferred to an adult prison to serve the remainder of his time.
After the sentencing, VanTreese shared her feelings online, saying the guilty plea brought some closure — but not peace.
“At the end of the day, no amount of time in prison will ever be enough,” she wrote. “He took my baby brother in the worst way possible.”
