Darin McFarlin (El Dorado County Sheriff's Office)

A shocking case out of California has reached its final chapter—and the details are as disturbing as they come.

Former fire captain Darin McFarlin has been sentenced to multiple life terms without the possibility of parole for the brutal 2025 killings of his fiancée, Marissa Divodi-Lessa Herzog, and her 7-year-old son.

According to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, the violence erupted on August 21, 2025, during what started as a quiet movie night. McFarlin, who at the time worked for Cal Fire, was watching the 2008 film Fireproof with his fiancée and her children when things took a deadly turn.

Prosecutors say McFarlin became enraged over how firefighters were portrayed in the movie and stormed off. When Herzog followed him, an argument broke out—and it quickly escalated into violence.

Authorities say McFarlin strangled Herzog during the confrontation. When she managed to break away and said she planned to report the incident, he allegedly grabbed a loaded gun and followed her into another room. There, while she was on the phone with a family member, he struck her and then shot her in the head.

Her 7-year-old son was in the room.

In a horrifying moment, prosecutors say McFarlin then turned the weapon on the child and shot him as well. The couple’s 9-year-old daughter was also present and became the next target—but in a desperate act of survival, she managed to escape, running out of his line of sight and eventually fleeing the home.

McFarlin fled the scene after putting his phone on airplane mode, but was later tracked down and arrested in Mono County without incident. The young girl was found safe.

In court on April 13, McFarlin expressed remorse, saying he was “truly very sorry,” especially to the surviving child. But for many, the apology does little to soften the sheer brutality of what happened.

District Attorney Vern Pierson called the crime “horrific and senseless,” adding that the sentence ensures McFarlin will never harm anyone again.

  1. Well heck, in true American tradition, I think the movie producers and writers share culpability in this.
We all know how Hollywood distorts everything they touch.
