A shocking domestic homicide is under investigation in northern Spain after a woman was arrested in connection with the brutal death of her longtime partner.
Authorities say the 55-year-old woman was taken into custody on Jan. 30 following the killing of her 67-year-old partner at their home in Bilbao. The arrest was announced in a translated statement from the Ertzaintza, the regional police force.
According to police, officers were dispatched to a residence in Bilbao’s Uribarri neighborhood after receiving a report of a possible homicide. When they entered the apartment, they found the body of a man who had suffered what investigators described as a violent death.
Police said the victim’s partner was present at the scene and allegedly confessed to the killing. She was arrested on suspicion of murder as investigators opened a formal probe into what led up to the incident.
Local outlet El Diario Vasco reported that the woman’s adult daughter contacted authorities after her mother told her she had committed the crime. The outlet also reported that the victim’s body showed multiple stab wounds, including to the neck, and that his penis had been severed.
Neighbors told the publication they heard shouting coming from the apartment prior to the killing. While officials have not confirmed a motive, local reports suggest jealousy may have played a role.
“I’m in shock. We never expected this, and certainly not in the way it happened,” a friend of the couple told El Diario Vasco. “After work, I would often have a drink with them on the terrace. They laughed and talked like any normal couple. There has to be something behind this.”
Another neighbor echoed that sentiment, saying the pair appeared happy and stable. “They seemed like the perfect couple,” the neighbor said.
According to local reports, the couple had been together for about five years. The victim was the owner of a neighborhood bar, a place where many residents knew him personally.
Authorities have not released further details as the investigation continues.
