Nine cruise passengers were arrested on drug charges while attempting to board a Royal Caribbean International ship in Miami, turning what was supposed to be a party-filled voyage into a law enforcement crackdown.

According to authorities, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Interdiction Squad was called in on February 1 to assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection during a drug enforcement operation at PortMiami.

The ship was preparing to depart on an Atlantis charter cruise marketed as “The World’s Biggest Gay Festival At Sea.” The weeklong trip was scheduled to include stops in Puerto Rico and St. Maarten before returning to Miami on February 8.

Court records show the nine travelers, ranging in age from 27 to 51, were charged in connection with alleged drug offenses involving substances including ketamine, MDMA, cocaine, methamphetamine, GHB, and GBL. All nine face possession charges, while four are also accused of drug trafficking. Prosecutors allege that most of the individuals were carrying combinations of multiple illegal substances.

Attorneys for four of the defendants did not immediately respond to media inquiries, and court documents did not list legal representation for the remaining individuals.

Neither Royal Caribbean’s parent company nor Atlantis, the charter cruise organizer, issued immediate statements following the arrests.
