A Florida high school football coach has been arrested and accused of soliciting a minor, prompting his immediate dismissal from his job and raising serious concerns within the local school community.
According to multiple local reports, 39-year-old Colby Erskin was taken into custody Thursday, February 5, in Sanford, Florida — about 30 miles north of Orlando. Deputies with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office arrested Erskin on a warrant issued out of Broward County.
Authorities say the warrant includes charges of solicitation of a child and transmission of harmful material to minors. Additional details about the alleged conduct have not yet been released.
Deputies located Erskin in Sanford and served the warrant without incident, according to reports.
At the time of his arrest, Erskin was employed as a football coach at Mount Dora High School in Lake County. NBC Miami reported that he had also previously served as the head football coach at South Plantation High School in South Florida.
Lake County Schools confirmed that Erskin was fired immediately after administrators learned of his arrest.
“Mr. Erskin, who was hired less than a month ago as our football coach, was dismissed from his position after we learned that he had been arrested on a South Florida warrant for allegations that do not involve any of our students,” the district said in a statement.
The district added that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Reports indicate that Mount Dora High School held a meet-and-greet event on January 15 that allowed students to meet Erskin shortly after he was hired.
Erskin is currently being held at the Seminole County Jail without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, February 6, at 2 p.m. local time.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not released further details about the alleged victim or circumstances surrounding the charges.
