A California father of three is dead after what began as a minor traffic incident turned into a nightmare on a busy San Diego highway — all while his two young daughters sat in the car.

Barrick Lo, 48, had just picked up his daughters, ages 7 and 9, from fencing class on February 12 and was heading to meet his wife and 5-year-old son for dinner. According to NBC affiliate KNSD and ABC affiliate KGTV, the family was traveling south on Interstate 805 when another vehicle attempted to pass and bumped Lo’s car.

Both drivers pulled over to the shoulder.

Family friend Peggy Mok told local outlets that Lo’s 9-year-old daughter watched as her father approached the other car to exchange insurance information.

“Barrick knocked on the glass. The other driver didn’t come out,” Mok said, according to KGTV. She claimed the driver then attempted to leave before suddenly accelerating toward Lo. “The other car tried to back off and then boom, drove towards him. His head hit on the edge of the road.”

Lo was rushed to a nearby hospital but died two days later from his injuries, according to reports.

The California Highway Patrol later arrested 57-year-old Lawrence Wynn after locating his vehicle several days after the incident. According to a criminal complaint reviewed by KGTV, Wynn has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including murder. Court documents cited by local outlets also state that Wynn had a prior felony conviction.

“We want justice,” Mok told KGTV.

Lo, an attorney and devoted father, is being remembered as a kind and steady presence in his community. A GoFundMe page set up to support his family describes him as “a true friend” whose “gentle spirit and kindness touched so many lives.”

He leaves behind a grieving wife and three young children — including two daughters who witnessed the horrifying moments that changed their family forever.

Authorities have not released additional details as the case moves through the courts.
