A once-prominent megachurch family in Indiana is now at the center of a deeply disturbing scandal that has rocked both a congregation and the state’s political circles.

Jonathan Peternel, 24, of Pendleton, was sentenced Friday to six years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to one Level 4 felony count of child exploitation and three felony counts of possession of child sexual abuse material.

The case drew widespread attention not only because of the nature of the evidence uncovered, but because Peternel’s father, Nathan Peternel, is listed as lead pastor at Life Church and has longstanding ties to Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith.

Judge Hands Down Maximum Allowed Sentence Under Plea Deal

Madison Superior Court 6 Judge Mark Dudley accepted a plea agreement that capped the executed sentence at six years. He then imposed the maximum allowed under that agreement.

Peternel received six years on the Level 4 child exploitation charge, along with additional sentences of three years each on two Level 5 possession charges and one year on a Level 6 possession charge. All counts will run concurrently, meaning the total sentence is six years.

He will serve four years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with two years suspended to probation. He is also required to register as a lifetime sex offender.

Peternel remained in custody throughout the case and will receive credit for time served. He was represented by a public defender.

Courtroom Packed With Supporters

The sentencing hearing drew a large crowd, many of whom appeared to be members of the Peternel family’s church community. His parents sat in the front row.

After the sentence was handed down, a group of supporters exited together. A sheriff’s deputy instructed them not to gather in the hallway, so they moved outside, formed a circle, held hands, and prayed.

‘I’m Deeply Sorry’

Before sentencing, Peternel addressed the court.

“Your honor first I want to say that I’m deeply sorry. I hate my sin that I’ve committed,” he said. “I want to apologize to anybody who has fallen victim to my behavior.”

He apologized to his family, friends, and church, saying he caused “unbelievable stress and embarrassment.”

Turning to his parents, he said, “I’m sorry for putting you in this humiliating situation. You’ve been dishonored, your wonderful reputations have been ruined and your names have been dragged through the mud all because I cared about myself more than you.”

Peternel acknowledged he was raised in church and knew right from wrong but chose to act “completely contrary to the way I was raised.”

While in jail, he said he recommitted his life to Christianity, participated in daily Bible studies, and completed a 12-step recovery program.

“I promise to spend the rest of my life fighting the wickedness that I participated in,” he told the court. “Through faith in the Lord, I trust that your sentence will be proper.”

More Than 200 Files Allegedly Found

The investigation began after the Hamilton County Metro Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A CyberTip report indicated that illegal material had allegedly been uploaded to Snapchat from Peternel’s account.

Authorities executed a search warrant at the family’s Pendleton home and seized multiple electronic devices.

Court documents state that forensic investigators found more than 200 files of suspected child sexual abuse material. The material reportedly included violent abuse content, images described as sadomasochistic in nature, and photorealistic AI-generated images depicting nude minors.

Investigators also cited chat logs suggesting distribution of explicit material within a Snapchat group called “Diddy Disciples,” a reference to Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was convicted in 2025 on federal sex trafficking-related charges and is currently serving a prison sentence while appealing.

The affidavit further alleged that more than 50 intimate photos and videos on Peternel’s phone appeared to show his parents nude or engaged in sexual acts — a detail that intensified scrutiny when it first became public.
