A heartbreaking tragedy in Georgia has left a family devastated after a young boy was shot and killed inside his own home.
Police say a 14-year-old is now behind bars, accused of shooting his 12-year-old friend, identified by family as Cameron Coney, during what authorities believe may have been reckless behavior involving a gun.
Officers responded just before 2 p.m. Saturday to a home on Lathrop Street SE in Atlanta, where they found Cameron suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Investigators have not confirmed exactly what led up to the shooting, but family members say Cameron had friends over at the time—and one of them allegedly brought a gun into the house.
According to Cameron’s aunt, the situation escalated in a terrifying way.
She told local reporters that the teen with the weapon had been pointing it at multiple people in the room. When it was aimed at Cameron, it was pointed directly at his chest.
Moments later, the gun went off.
Authorities have not said whether the shooting was intentional or accidental, but the 14-year-old suspect is now facing a murder charge and is being held at a youth detention center.
Those who knew Cameron say the loss is almost impossible to process.
Family members described him as a fun-loving, playful kid who could always make people laugh. In a fundraiser created after his death, loved ones said the tragedy is even more painful because it happened in the one place he should have felt safest—his own bedroom.
The suspect’s next court date has not yet been announced.
