Yorleni Shoff (Rowan County Sheriff's Office)

A tragic and deeply unsettling case out of North Carolina has taken a deadly turn.

Authorities say a 93-year-old man has died after allegedly being attacked by his own wife during a late-night domestic incident.

Deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call around 2 a.m. on April 9 from Yorleni Shoff, who reported that her husband, Richard Shoff, was lying on the floor bleeding inside their Salisbury home.

When officers arrived, they found what they described as a significant amount of blood, indicating a violent assault had taken place. Richard was discovered unresponsive and rushed to a nearby hospital with severe head injuries.

Investigators later recovered a broken vase from the home, which they believe may have been used in the attack.

Yorleni Shoff, 58, was taken into custody and initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and domestic violence. She was later released after posting a $500,000 bond.

But the case quickly escalated.

A day later, authorities were notified that Richard had died from his injuries at the hospital, prompting detectives to launch a homicide investigation. The charges against Yorleni were then upgraded to first-degree murder.

She was located at a Sleep Inn and taken back into custody without incident. She is now being held without bond at the Rowan County Detention Center as the investigation continues.

Officials have not released additional details, but they are asking anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together what led to the deadly incident.
