A deeply disturbing case out of California is leaving people shaken after authorities say a vulnerable teenage girl was neglected to death by the very people responsible for her care.

Two caregivers, 33-year-old Megan Fredrick and 37-year-old Sherwood Johnson II, have been arrested and charged with murder and child abuse causing death, according to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office.

The case dates back to January 2025, when deputies were called to a home in Live Oak for a medical emergency. Inside, they found a 14-year-old girl with developmental disabilities unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead.

But what initially appeared to be a medical call quickly raised red flags.

Investigators say the circumstances were suspicious from the start, prompting a deeper look into what had been happening behind closed doors.

According to authorities, the girl required constant care and depended on a feeding tube for all of her nutrition — meaning she relied entirely on her caregivers to survive.

What investigators uncovered next was heartbreaking.

An autopsy later revealed the teen died from starvation and neglect. Her death was officially ruled a homicide.

By the time charges were filed, the two suspects had already left the state. They were eventually tracked down and arrested on outstanding warrants and are now being held in the Spokane County Jail while awaiting extradition back to California.

Sheriff Brandon Barnes called the case tragic, saying his team handled the investigation with both professionalism and compassion.

As of now, it’s unclear whether either suspect has obtained legal representation.
