A heartbreaking case out of Michigan has reached its final chapter after a woman was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal killing of her young stepson.
Elysa Ella-Ann Kelemen, 34, will spend the rest of her life behind bars after being convicted of first-degree felony murder in the death of 6-year-old Kyron Kelemen, according to the Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors say the child was killed in a hotel room in early 2024 after Kelemen became enraged when he accidentally knocked over her laptop. She later admitted she “came down” on his stomach with her knee during the incident.
The medical examiner ruled Kyron’s death a homicide caused by blunt force injuries to the abdomen.
But what makes the case even more devastating is what investigators say happened before that day.
Kyron had previously been removed from his biological mother’s care due to her struggles with addiction and was placed with his father and stepmother. However, multiple reports of suspected abuse surfaced in the months leading up to his death.
In September 2023, officials were alerted after Kyron showed up to school with severe bruising across his face, including a black eye and bloodshot eye. Reports also described bruises on his chest and rib area.
The following month, another complaint alleged he had “a face full of bruises” and broken blood vessels in both eyes. Then came an even more alarming warning.
“Elysa is physically abusing Kyron. This is a recurring thing,” one report stated.
Despite the repeated red flags, those claims were never substantiated, and Kyron was not removed from the home.
At some point, he was even pulled from school, further limiting outside contact.
During the trial, a former friend of Kelemen testified that she “did not like” the boy, was “sick of taking care of him,” and even referred to him as “stupid.”
In a chilling twist, investigators also revealed that Kelemen had been the subject of a separate child death investigation years earlier involving her own son. That case was ultimately closed with no evidence of abuse or neglect.
Kyron’s biological mother, Angelina Foghino, has spoken publicly about her grief, saying she feels she failed to protect her son.
“I didn’t protect him… I feel like I failed him,” she said.
Prosecutors didn’t hold back when announcing the sentence.
“Kyron was senselessly murdered by someone who should have protected him,” said Prosecutor Douglas Lloyd, pointing to both Kelemen’s actions and what he described as failures within the child welfare system.
He added that Kyron was the second child to die under her care—a tragedy he believes could have been prevented.
