Kayla Blake and Kennedi McWhorter

A horrific double murder case in Kentucky has come to a close, with the man responsible sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Authorities say Joshua Cottrell, 44, pleaded guilty on April 28 to two counts of murder and tampering with physical evidence in the killings of Kayla Blake, 37, and her 13-year-old daughter Kennedi McWhorter.

As part of the plea, Cottrell was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional five-year sentence for tampering with evidence, to be served at the same time.

The brutal crime came to light on September 19, 2025, after a concerned caller requested a welfare check when Kayla failed to show up for work.

When officers arrived at the home, they made a devastating discovery.

Kayla was found in a back bedroom, covered on a bed, with fatal stab wounds. Just across the hall, her daughter Kennedi was found on the floor with severe injuries.

Investigators say the scene showed signs of tampering, with evidence suggesting the bodies had been moved in an attempt to interfere with the investigation.

Neighbors told police they had seen Cottrell at the home the day before the bodies were discovered. Authorities later found him with blood on his clothing.

The case also revealed a troubling past. Court records show Cottrell had a prior conviction for second-degree manslaughter in the death of another man years earlier.

For those who knew the victims, the loss has been devastating.

Kayla worked as a nurse helping patients battling addiction, dedicating her career to caring for others. Her daughter Kennedi was remembered as a bright and active teen—an athlete who loved softball, a strong student, and a committed member of her church community.

One family friend said the plea deal spared loved ones from having to relive the painful details in court, but the grief remains overwhelming.

With the sentencing now complete, the community is left remembering a mother and daughter whose lives were taken far too soon—and a case that has left a lasting impact on everyone who followed it.

NO, a plea deal spares the prosecutor from having to go to court.
And it spares the risk of some lone female juror who thinks the defendant is cute and can’t find him guilty.
