A terrifying attack in one of Spain’s most popular tourist areas has left a woman dead and a suspect in custody.

The violence unfolded late Saturday morning in Esplugues de Llobregat, just outside Barcelona, when police say a man launched a brutal assault in broad daylight on a busy street.

Witnesses described a chaotic and disturbing scene. According to reports, the suspect was acting nervously before suddenly pulling out a large knife and attacking the woman in the middle of Joan Miró Street.

Bystanders quickly called emergency services as the situation spiraled. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, the victim died from her injuries.

Authorities launched a major search immediately after the attack, and the suspect was tracked down and arrested a short time later.

Investigators have not yet released the identities of either the victim or the suspect.

Police are now working to determine what led to the attack and whether the two knew each other. Officials say the case is being looked at as a possible instance of gender-based violence, though that has not been confirmed.

Detectives are also investigating whether another man treated nearby for minor injuries may have been connected to the same incident.

Photos from the scene showed emergency crews setting up a forensic tent to shield the area as they began processing evidence.

Local officials expressed shock over the killing, calling it a deeply tragic act of violence and urging the public not to spread unverified information while the investigation continues.

The attack has once again raised concerns about violent incidents in busy public areas, especially in locations popular with tourists.
