A horrifying domestic incident on Long Island turned deadly on Mother’s Day after police say a man armed with a knife was shot and killed while his elderly mother was left seriously injured.
The violence unfolded shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday in Riverhead when officers with the Southampton Town Police Department responded to reports of what authorities described as an “escalating violent domestic situation.”
When officers arrived, they encountered a man allegedly armed with a knife. Police opened fire, fatally shooting him at the scene, according to local reports.
Inside the home, officers discovered a 62-year-old woman in a wheelchair suffering from serious stab wounds. Investigators believe the injured woman was the man’s mother.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Her current condition has not been publicly updated.
“Officers secured the scene and an investigation is ongoing,” Southampton Town Police said in a statement.
Three responding officers were also treated at a hospital following the chaotic incident but were later released.
Because the shooting involved police use of deadly force, detectives from the New York State Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene as part of a standard review process. The agency’s Office of Special Investigation is now conducting a preliminary assessment.
Authorities have not publicly identified either the deceased man or his injured mother as the investigation continues.
Neighbors told local media the woman was the mother of triplet sons and had allegedly endured years of domestic turmoil inside the home.
According to reports, at least two of the sons reportedly struggled with mental illness.
Residents described the mother as quiet and said she had allegedly suffered years of abuse following the death of her husband.
Reports also indicate the woman made at least one 911 call Sunday telling authorities she was afraid of her son before the violence erupted.
The exact circumstances leading up to the stabbing and police shooting remain under investigation.
Representatives from the Suffolk County Police Department and Southampton Town Police had not released additional details as of Monday.
