A chilling new detail has surfaced in the kidnapping and murder case of 16-year-old Kayla Huff, whose body was found in a wooded Missouri conservation area more than a week after she was reported missing.
Authorities say one of the suspects, 20-year-old Alayna Mason, allegedly told jail staff she had poison ivy after her arrest. Investigators now believe that small detail could matter, because Kayla’s body was later found in a heavily wooded area.
Kayla was found dead on Wednesday, May 13, in the Rudolf Bennitt Conservation Area, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.
Four people have since been arrested in connection with her kidnapping: Julian Mason, 26, Christopher Hull, 23, Alayna Mason, 20, and Hunter Ames, 19.
Alayna is also charged with murder.
According to probable cause statements previously obtained by PEOPLE, Alayna is accused of telling several people that she and an accomplice kidnapped Kayla, put the teen in the trunk of a vehicle, and drove her to the conservation area.
Authorities allege Kayla was then dragged, assaulted, and shot.
After Alayna was arrested on May 7, a Randolph County official said she developed a rash that appeared to be poison ivy. According to the probable cause statement, Alayna allegedly told jail staff she got it from being in the woods.
Investigators noted that the Rudolf Bennitt Conservation Area, where Kayla’s body was found and where Alayna is accused of taking her, is a “densely wooded” location.
A motive for the alleged kidnapping and killing has not been publicly revealed.
Alayna was originally arrested on charges of stealing a vehicle, stealing a firearm, and escape or attempted escape from custody while under arrest for a felony.
Her charges have since been upgraded to first-degree murder and kidnapping.
Online court records did not show plea information as of Monday.
Kayla’s death has left her family and community devastated as authorities continue investigating the horrifying allegations surrounding her disappearance and final moments.
