Christopher Kaulaity (Kern County DA's Office)

A California man could spend the rest of his life in prison after prosecutors say a family fight over a clogged toilet ended with him brutally killing his aunt inside the home they shared.

Christopher Kaulaity, 29, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the December 2024 murder of his aunt, 45-year-old Maria Carmen Torrez, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime.

A judge also added another year for a weapon enhancement, meaning Kaulaity must serve at least 26 years before he can even be considered for parole.

The disturbing case stunned the courtroom not only because of the violence, but because prosecutors say the deadly attack began after a household argument over a single clogged toilet.

Kaulaity and Torrez lived in a multigenerational home on Haley Street with seven other adult relatives. According to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, tension inside the house had been building before the killing, especially after the family fought over problems with the only toilet in the residence.

Family members reportedly told Kaulaity he needed to fix his issues with his aunt or he would have to leave the home.

The next day, prosecutors say the situation turned deadly.

On Dec. 7, 2024, Torrez was walking to the bathroom when she passed Kaulaity in the hallway and insulted him, according to prosecutors. Once she was inside the bathroom, Kaulaity allegedly went to his bedroom, grabbed pepper spray and a knife, then kicked open the bathroom door.

Authorities said he pepper-sprayed his aunt “to blind her” before stabbing her repeatedly in the back and neck.

Investigators said Kaulaity later admitted he “went to town” on Torrez, stabbing her seven times with a long construction blade.

Even more chilling, prosecutors said he described the killing as “butcher style” and compared himself to “Norman Bates,” the fictional killer from Psycho.

He also allegedly told investigators the stabbing “reminded me of when I was a kid again,” saying he used to carve Play-Doh figures and impale them with sticks.

After the attack, Kaulaity reportedly called 911 himself and told authorities he had just stabbed his aunt to death. Deputies arrived and found Torrez dead from her injuries. Kaulaity was taken into custody at the scene.

At trial, his defense team argued that he suffered from severe mental health issues, including hallucinations, and claimed he experienced a temporary blackout during the killing.

But the jury rejected the insanity defense after a forensic psychologist testified that Kaulaity understood his actions were wrong.

A jury found him guilty of first-degree murder last month.

During sentencing, the courtroom reportedly grew tense again when Kaulaity showed no remorse. As members of Torrez’s family entered the room, he allegedly shouted at the victim’s sister, “I hope you rot in hell with your sister,” using profanity.

The victim’s sister reportedly fired back, “I hate you guys,” referring to Kaulaity and the relatives who came to court to support him.

Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer called the killing a tragic act against a woman who should have been safe inside her own home.

“Kaulaity’s murder of his aunt was a tragic act against a woman who should have been safe inside her home,” Zimmer said after the conviction.

She said her office remains committed to holding violent offenders accountable, especially those who try to excuse their actions with what prosecutors described as unwarranted insanity claims.

For Torrez’s family, the sentence brings some measure of justice — but it cannot erase the horror of a household argument that turned into a brutal killing over something as ordinary as a clogged toilet.

  1. A loser who couldn’t get his own place to live so was sponging of the other people in the home. Now he will be sponging off the taxpayers by getting free room and board in prison. They need to start putting these people to death.

  2. Most of the murderers aren’t insane — they’re just downright mean and evil.
