A woman was simply sitting down for lunch at a Georgia restaurant when police say a total stranger walked up behind her and stabbed her in the back in a shocking daytime attack.

The terrifying incident happened around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday at a First Watch restaurant on Blackmon Drive in Decatur, just northeast of Atlanta.

According to the DeKalb County Police Department, the woman was eating inside the breakfast-and-lunch chain when 22-year-old Walter Scrutchings allegedly approached her and plunged a knife into her back.

Authorities said Scrutchings did not know the woman.

Despite being wounded, the victim managed to get herself to a nearby business, where she called for help. She was taken to a local hospital, and police said her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Officers responded to the scene and arrested Scrutchings. He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault.

Police have not released a possible motive or said what may have happened in the moments before the attack.

The stabbing stunned people in the area, especially because Decatur is known by many residents as a safe, walkable community.

“I’ve lived here most of my life and I kind of take for granted that it’s a safe, pedestrian-friendly area,” nearby resident Charlie Cote told WAGA.

The attack took place in the middle of the day at a restaurant known for breakfast, brunch and lunch, making the randomness of the alleged stabbing even more unsettling.

For now, investigators have only said the woman and the suspect were strangers.

Scrutchings remains behind bars, and no future court date has been listed yet.

  1. Why are blacks so dysfunctional, everything they do is wrong and they can’t seem to function in civilized society.
