An Iowa woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after authorities say she helped serve a pregnant woman a drug-laced lasagna in a disturbing attempt to cause a miscarriage.
Amber Snow, 36, of Decorah, was sentenced Tuesday, May 26, after pleading guilty to four counts: conspiracy to commit a non-forcible felony, attempted nonconsensual termination of pregnancy, child endangerment, and a controlled substance violation, according to court records reviewed by PEOPLE.
Judge Richard D. Stochl handed down the 10-year prison sentence.
The bizarre and chilling case began after authorities were tipped off in January about a “family size pan of lasagna” that was believed to have been laced with drugs.
According to the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Snow and an alleged co-conspirator, later identified as Matthew Uthoff, tainted the dish with a controlled substance. Testing later showed the lasagna was positive for oxycodone, authorities said.
Investigators said the pair intended to cause a pregnant woman in the family who received the lasagna to have a miscarriage.
Snow was arrested on March 10. Uthoff was arrested shortly after on March 26.
Authorities said electronic communications between Snow and Uthoff helped lead to the arrests.
The motive behind the alleged plot has not been publicly revealed.
The pregnant woman and baby targeted in the incident are safe, the sheriff’s office previously confirmed to PEOPLE. Officials did not say whether the woman ate any of the lasagna or whether the baby has since been born.
After her arrest, Snow was held on a $100,000 cash bond.
Uthoff has pleaded not guilty and is still awaiting trial.
He has been charged with delivering a controlled substance, child endangerment, and intentionally terminating a human pregnancy without the knowledge and voluntary consent of the pregnant person. He also faces two counts each of administering a harmful substance to an adult and administering a harmful substance to a juvenile, according to court documents.
It is unclear whether Uthoff has an attorney who can speak on his behalf or when he is next expected in court.
