A Minnesota teenager is facing a murder charge after her mother was found brutally beaten to death inside their home last week.
Georgina Lee Monk, 43, was discovered dead on Friday, June 26, during a welfare check at a residence in Maplewood, according to local reports.
Police quickly identified Monk’s teenage daughter as a suspect and took her into custody shortly afterward. The teen has not been publicly named because of her age.
The investigation reportedly began after the girl walked into her daytime treatment center and asked staff to request a wellness check on her mother because she “felt regret,” according to a criminal complaint cited by local media.
When officers arrived at the home, they found Monk’s body inside. Police said she had been severely beaten.
A neighbor later told investigators that Monk had recently taken away her daughter’s phone, according to KARE 11.
Charging documents also allege that the teen made a chilling remark to police after she was taken into custody.
“Am I a criminal because I only killed one person?” she allegedly asked, according to the complaint.
People familiar with the mother and daughter reportedly told investigators that the pair had a history of frequent conflict.
The teen allegedly told police she had reached a breaking point.
“It wasn’t just rage, I just couldn’t handle it no more,” she said, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. “I couldn’t wait another year of all the criticisms and all the manipulations, the mental and emotional abuse. I just couldn’t, it was too much.”
The girl has been charged with second-degree murder.
It was not immediately clear whether she has entered a plea or whether an attorney has been appointed to represent her.

She thought she had it bad at home, let’s see how great it is in prison.
Hope she learns something while in prison
