A Tennessee woman is facing serious charges after allegedly crashing her minivan into a Knoxville assisted living facility, killing a 96-year-old resident in what police say may have been a suicide attempt.
Eleasah Williams, 24, was arrested Saturday and charged with vehicular homicide with recklessness. She is currently being held at Knox County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
The deadly crash happened around 5:15 a.m. at the Shannondale Assisted Living Facility on Middlebrook Pike. According to the Knoxville Police Department, Williams’ vehicle smashed through the brick exterior of the building, plowing directly into a resident’s bedroom and killing the occupant, identified as Walter Humphrey.
Photos from the scene show the van fully embedded inside the building with bricks, furniture, and debris scattered everywhere. Notably, police found no skid marks in the grass—suggesting the minivan may have launched airborne before slamming into the room.
Williams was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being booked into jail later that day.
Details from court records paint a troubling picture of what led up to the crash. Police had received a call earlier that morning from an apartment complex nearby, reporting that Williams was “suicidal and homicidal” and had expressed a desire to kill herself and others. She reportedly admitted to taking multiple prescription medications and vaping THC before getting behind the wheel and speeding off.
Authorities believe she drove across four lanes of traffic from Woodview Lane and directly into the facility—targeting the building at a dangerously high speed.
Walter Humphrey, the man killed in the crash, was remembered by local community members as a beloved figure. His sudden and tragic death has left many in shock.
“We hate it for our neighbors and for our friends across the street at Shannondale,” said Pastor Troy Forrester of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church. “Our prayers are extended to him, his family, and all of the residents of that area that were affected by this tragedy.”
Another neighbor called the incident “a very hard hit for the family that had the person there being cared for,” adding, “It’s just tragic.”
The investigation is ongoing, and more charges could follow depending on toxicology results and further findings.
