A Georgia man is facing a laundry list of serious felony charges after prosecutors say he stole his wife’s SUV—then repeatedly ran her over with it in a horrifying attack witnessed by bystanders.
Twan Maurice Byrd was indicted this week following his February arrest in connection with the violent incident, which unfolded in broad daylight on Feb. 3. According to court documents and witness reports, Byrd allegedly stole his wife’s Chevy Equinox and used it as a weapon—ramming into her multiple times and even backing over her as she tried to flee.
Witnesses told police they saw Byrd attempt to run his wife over while she was on a curb, and then again after she ran to a nearby car wash to escape. Byrd allegedly hit her one more time before abandoning both the vehicle and his critically injured wife at the scene and fleeing on foot.
But the violence didn’t stop there.
According to the indictment, Byrd is also accused of strangling and striking his wife in the face during the brutal attack. When officers arrived, they found the woman bleeding heavily from her nose and mouth, suffering from a broken and severely disfigured leg. Despite her injuries, she was able to tell police that Byrd—her husband—was her attacker.
Prosecutors also allege that Byrd later tried to prevent his wife from testifying against him during their divorce proceedings. They claim he offered her “whatever she wanted” in exchange for her silence and that he harassed her with repeated, intimidating phone calls.
The full list of charges Byrd now faces is extensive: hijacking a motor vehicle, criminal attempt to commit a felony (murder), kidnapping, influencing a witness, stalking, obstruction of an officer, and three counts of aggravated battery.
He is currently being held without bond in Chatham County Jail and is set to appear in court for arraignment on October 1.
