An 18-year-old California man is accused of livestreaming a brutal stabbing on Discord in what police believe was a twisted attempt to gain online notoriety.
The shocking attack happened around 11:30 p.m. on August 19 in Newark, about 35 miles southeast of San Francisco. According to police, officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 5600 block of Thornton Avenue and found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds in his back.
Paramedics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities later confirmed that he’s now in stable condition.
Detectives identified the suspect as Luis McLaughlin Jr., 18. A SWAT team arrested him Sunday at a home on Civic Terrace Avenue, and prosecutors formally charged him Monday with one count of attempted murder.
Investigators say the attack was completely unprovoked and carried out for attention. “The victim of the attack appears to have had no prior relationship with Mr. McLaughlin,” prosecutors said. “The attack was broadcast live on Mr. McLaughlin’s social media, Discord.”
According to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, the victim had been outside a restaurant cleaning kitchen equipment when McLaughlin allegedly launched the knife attack. The restaurant’s CEO later revealed that the victim’s lung was punctured during the stabbing and that he also suffered injuries to his shoulder.
Police recovered the alleged weapon and said McLaughlin even wrote an apology letter after his arrest.
Authorities continue to investigate what they describe as a disturbing act fueled by a “desire for notoriety.”
