A New Jersey caregiver is behind bars after authorities say he betrayed the trust of a vulnerable woman in the most disturbing way.
Michael W. Smith, 41, has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and one count of third-degree aggravated criminal sexual conduct, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. He was taken into custody on Jan. 29 in Westfield, New Jersey, where he lives.
Investigators say the case began unfolding on Jan. 18, when the Rochelle Park Police Department received a report of alleged abuse. A joint investigation between local police and county prosecutors followed.
Authorities say that investigation revealed Smith allegedly sexually assaulted an adult woman in Rochelle Park while he was employed as her caregiver.
According to reports citing a criminal complaint, the victim told police she was sent videos allegedly showing Smith performing sexual acts on her while she was incapacitated. Officials have not identified who sent the videos to the woman.
The alleged assaults reportedly occurred on multiple occasions between December 2023 and June 2024.
At the time, the woman was recovering from an accident that left her in a wheelchair and unable to care for herself, making the allegations even more disturbing.
Smith is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail as he awaits a detention hearing. It is unclear whether he has retained an attorney.
