What should have been one of the happiest times of her life ended in unimaginable tragedy for a young bride-to-be in Ireland.

Laura Connolly, 34, died just hours after shopping for her wedding dress when she was struck and killed by a van in the early morning hours of July 11, 2021.

Connolly had been preparing to marry her childhood sweetheart, Joseph McCullagh, before the devastating crash cut her life short on the outskirts of Lifford.

Now, nearly five years later, disturbing new details about the tragic night have emerged during court proceedings in Ireland.

According to reports from the hearing at Letterkenny Circuit Court, van driver Sean Connaughton pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death.

He was also reportedly arraigned on additional charges that included driving without insurance, driving without a valid license, and failing to keep his vehicle at the scene after the fatal collision.

During emotional testimony in court, one of Connolly’s friends described the group’s final moments together before the tragedy unfolded.

Friend Demi Carlin told the court the women had been out together that evening laughing, dancing, and singing as they walked along the roadway.

At one point, Connolly reportedly broke away from the group and lay down in the middle of the road with her head resting on the center white line.

Carlin testified that the group initially continued walking and did not realize Connolly had stopped behind them.

Moments later, she heard a van approaching.

According to testimony, Carlin screamed for her friend to get up and move onto the sidewalk, but it was too late.

Witnesses said the van appeared to swerve but never slowed down before striking Connolly and continuing down the road without stopping.

Other bystanders testified they heard a loud bang before rushing outside and finding the future bride critically injured in the roadway.

One witness with emergency medical training attempted CPR, but could not find a pulse.

Pathologist Dr. Heidi Okkers later confirmed Connolly died at the scene shortly after 4 a.m. from catastrophic blunt force injuries.

Authorities said Connaughton later turned himself in to police after learning about Connolly’s death, but initially denied being involved in any crash.

Investigators eventually linked him to the scene after DNA matching Connolly was reportedly discovered on his van.

In court, Connaughton apologized to the victim’s family and admitted that if he had obeyed his driving ban and stayed off the road, “Laura would have been alive.”

He is expected to be sentenced next week.

  1. Why in earth would she lie down in the middle of the road? I mean, he should never have been driving and he did not stop and even denied the accident, but she was lying in the middle of a road! They had been out dancing and partying. Was she inebriated? The blame can be placed on both parties here.
