A Florida woman is facing serious child abuse charges after a disturbing discovery by authorities: a 9-year-old boy’s desperate cry for help scrawled across a pink sticky note.

Katrina Carrillo, 25, was arrested on April 23 in Miami, more than a month after investigators launched a probe sparked by the boy’s alarming message, local station WPLG reports. The child allegedly wrote the haunting words “please help us,” although it remains unclear where the note was found or who came across it first, according to Law & Crime.

The note immediately triggered an investigation by the Florida Department of Children and Families. Just weeks later, on April 9, the boy sat down with a forensic interviewer and described horrifying allegations. He claimed Carrillo had pinned him to the ground, beaten him, and at one point smothered him with a pink blanket and pillow until he couldn’t breathe, WPLG reports.

Police arrested Carrillo after she voluntarily met with detectives at Miami Police headquarters. She denied the allegations during the meeting, according to court records.

Carrillo was booked at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and hit with a felony child abuse charge. She posted $5,000 bail the same day and was released from custody.

The following day, Carrillo appeared in court where a judge ordered her to stay away from her boyfriend’s children. Attempts to reach Carrillo’s attorney for comment were unsuccessful.

The Miami Police Department has urged anyone with additional information to contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers.
